Spring 2008

Annual Spring Fling at Todmorden Mills
Todmorden Mills, 67 Pottery Road
The 11th Annual FODE Spring Fling
Kick off our season with our regular clean-up operation Todmorden Mills, followed by a free organic BBQ and interpretive walk of the Wildflower Preserve. In partnership with the Todmorden Wildflower Preserve.
By Transit: Take the Broadview 8, Mortimer 62 or Cosburn 87 from Broadview Station to the corner of Broadview and Pottery Rd (also Mortimer). Walk down the paved trail on the south/west side of Pottery Road. Todmorden Mills is at the bottom.
Parking (on-site at the end of the driveway), FREE

Tuesday April 15, 10AM - 9PM
Whole Foods 5% Community Support Day
87 Avenue Rd, lower level
Come down to the Whole Foods supermarket in Yorkville’s Hazelton Lanes Shopping Centre on Tuesday April 15 and help support FODE. Five percent of sales on this day will go to support our restoration work in the Don Valley. If you are a regular at Whole Foods, this is a great day to do your shopping with them, if not, this is great day to give Toronto’s largest organic and natural supermarket a try.
Hours are 10am-9pm, parking on-site is available free for the first 90 minutes, or take transit and exit at the Cumberland exit of Bay Station. Access Whole Foods by walking north along Avenue Rd.

Saturday April 19, 11AM - 4PM
Toronto Botanical Garden
Edwards Gardens – S/W corner of Leslie and Lawrence
Celebrate Earth Day at the Toronto Botanical Garden with Friends of the Don East. The Toronto Botanical Garden will be leading workshops and talks and kids programs. FODE will be there to lead a walk through the natural areas of Edwards Gardens and to discuss the issues facing the City’s creeks in general and Wilket Creek in particular.

Sunday May 4, 10AM - 12 Noon
Taylor Creek Park Tree Planting
Haldon Ave Parking lot below Stan Wadlow Park.
Join FODE as we reforest a gentle slope above Taylor Creek.
By Transit: Take the Cosburn 87 Bus to Haldon Avenue (just east of Stan Wadlow Park)
Walk down to the parking lot.   That’s our meeting point!

Saturday May 10,  10AM - 12 Noon
Taylor Creek – North Bank Tree Planting
Haldon Ave Parking lot below Stan Wadlow Park
Join FODE as we add new species of trees and shubs creating a wilder more diverse forest along the north bank of Taylor Creek.
By Transit: Take the Cosburn 87 Bus to Haldon Avenue (just east of Stan Wadlow Park)

Saturday May 17, 10AM
Urban hike with the Bruce Trail Conservancy
Outside Broadview Subway Station
Come explore the central Don Valley, join leader and FODE board member and Bruce Trail Conservancy hike leader John Routh as you follow informal trails in the Don Valley that even the mountain bikers say are challenging.  Bring a bag lunch (lunch stop will around 1pm), and wear sturdy footwear, this is a 15km hike!
By Transit: Take the Subway to Broadview Station

Sunday May 18, 10AM - 12 Noon
Wildlflower Walk
Todmorden Mills, 67 Pottery Road
Join FODE and the Todmorden Wildflower Preserve we tour the beautfiul forest behind the Todmorden Paper Mills in search of some of the wild jewel of spring, including Trilliums, Jack-in-the-Pulpit and Mayapple.

Taylor Creek – The Forks - Tree Planting
Meet at the Taylor Creek Park Parking lot located
Just off Don Mills Rd., east side, north of O’Connor Drive
FODE began work in this area in 2007, join us as we fill in and expand a wet meadow forest.
Parking on-site is free, No transit access

Sunday June 1, 1:30PM – 3:00PM
Heritage Toronto – Don Valley Brick Works Walk
Meet at the entrance plaza, just west of the Parking lot
An industrial site since the latter part of the 19th century, the Brickworks is now being transformed into a valley wilderness park, and much more.  Learn how this site has influenced the history of the City from pre-colonial times to the present, and see how is evolving in our time!
Directions: This site is not transit accessible.  It can be reached by car via Bayview Ave.
Cyclists can brave Bayview Ave or access the site via the Moore Park Ravine.
Parking: On site, FREE

Summer 2008

East York Canada Day – All Day – July 1 
Stan Wadlow Park – 888 Cosburn Avenue
FODE will have a display at this fun-filled day at Stan Wadlow Park in East York. Come for the rides, the games, and the fireworks…but stop by the FODE booth!
By Transit: Cosburn #87 bus from Main or Broadview Stations.
Parking (limited on-street parking in area, be warned…VERY BUSY)

Saturday July 19 1:30PM - 3:00PM
Heritage Toronto – Goulding Estate Walk
Meet at the Parking lot on the East side of Dawes Rd,  just north of Crescent Town Rd.
Join us on this tour around the last surviving structure of the Dentonia Park Farm. Hear about the history of this site, where the Massey family helped pioneer pasteurization of milk in Toronto.  The surrounding grounds are beautiful, but in need of help. On this walk you’ll get to see FODE’s largest restoration project to date, involving over 3,000 trees, shrubs and wildflowers.
By Transit: Take Dawes #23 from Main Station, exit at the Park Vista Stop.
Parking: Limited on-site parking on the east side of Dawes Road.
The main parking lot on the west side of Dawes Road is near by. FREE

Monday September 08, 6PM
Fundraising Dinner
Allen’s - 143 Danforth Avenue

Our Annual fundraising dinner is back!   Along with the the 3-course meal, enjoy complimentary organic brew, courtesy of Mill Street Brewery, fabulous door prizes worth over $500.00 and NEW this year, a complimentary glass of wine with dinner.  Weather permitting; we will hold the dinner on the patio this year!  Come out and support the Don watershed through FODE at this wonderful event.
By Transit: Take the Subway to Broadview Station, walk south to Danforth, across the lights and one block east.
