Meduxnekeag River Association

Education Programs

Meduxnekeag River Association members have always felt that education is some of the most important environmental work our organization can do.

On our first walk through the forest which has now become the Meduxnekeag Valley Nature Preserve, one of the ways we saw it was as an outdoor classroom, a place where students could come to experience and learn from a mature forest. Once we had the first low impact marked walking trails in place, we began making that happen by offering guided walks to classes at two local Elementary Schools. Within a year, we were up to five schools. In the 2003-2004 school year more than 500 students accompanied by teachers, aides, and parents walked the trails. We also have on-preserve programs at Middle School and High School levels.

In addition to taking the schools into the environment, we take the environment into the schools through our annual Meduxnekeag Environmental Awareness Showcase, now in its third year. Last year, nearly 1200 Elementary students produced projects or artwork and essays on how they could reduce their environmental footprints.
