Bio Business International: Combining Activism
with Business
Bio Business International
of Toronto, thrives by demonstrating the kind of combination of ethics and
business management seen far too little in mainstream corporate offices.
The company markets terra femme, a body and environmentally-friendly pure
cotton tampon.
Says CEO Wilhelmina Nolan, " I found the purest, safest, most responsibly
made tampon available in the world, and I market it with care. I do it for
three reasons. One, the product is outstanding. I also need to support my
children and my work with women and children. "
Nolan emphatically states that most tampons contain ingredients that risk
women's health at unecessarily. Chlorine bleach, found in tampon fibers produces deadly by-products
like dioxin, PCBs, CFCs, and furan, These chemicals are known to cause cancer,
kill and cause mutations in life forms, including humans. The rayon fibers
commonly found in leading brands of tampons are well known to increase a
woman's chances of contracting menstrual Toxic Shock Syndrome.
Nolan says "My Terra Femme tampons provide
an alternative to the risks of conventional tampons. They're made from 100%
medical-grade cotton, so they don't come apart in our bodies), and are hygienically
sterilised with oxygen bleach. And they're a great tampon too!"
Ms. Nolan shares the profits from the tampons in expanding her community
work. She is founder and president of Project
Esperance, a 111 unit non-profit housing development
in Toronto for women and children survivors of assault and abuse. A survivor
herself, Wilhelmina uses her difficult experiences to benefit others like
her.
"It's time that women take control of situations that affect us. Including
control of where we live and what we buy for ourselves and our families.
We have the right and the responsibility to do everything in our power to
stay in control of our lives."
About her business: "My being in a for-profit business is providing an example of commitment to social responsibility that I feel all businesses should be showing. And my successful background in non-profit administration and community activism has provided me with the skills I need to succeed in business and fulfill my altruistic vision of a better world."
Wilhelmina Nolan brings a refreshing breath of
air to business today. Her ethical approach is indicative of the positive
thinking that is required by business to bring us out of a turbulent economy.
