New Students' FAQ

Congratulations on being admitted to a McGill graduate program! Now, how on earth do you go about getting a teaching assistantship? This is what you need to know:

Who do I talk to about getting a Teaching Assistantship?

At McGill, teaching assistants are hired by the individual department, or Hiring Unit, in which the courses are being offered. The process is administered by different staff members in different departments: for example, it may be the department’s administrative officer; the graduate or undergraduate secretary; or a faculty member who serves as the department’s TA Coordinator. The first thing you need to do is to contact your departmental secretary (check your department’s website for contact info) and ask them who the person responsible for TA hiring is. Then, you need to get in touch with that person.

Are Teaching Assistantships available in my department?

Good question. Some departments have loads of teaching assistantships, some have only a few, and a few have none at all. This is the first thing you will need to find out.

If there are no Teaching Assistantships in my department, can I apply to other departments at McGill?

Absolutely. Of course, there is no guarantee that you will be hired, as most departments will prioritize their own graduate students for TA positions. However, some departments have difficulty filling all of their positions every year, so it can’t hurt to apply.

How do I apply for a Teaching Assistantship? Is there an application form?

To apply for a teaching assistantship, you must fill out a TA application form, which will be provided to you by the person responsible for TA hiring. (You can also download one here.) In most cases, you will also be expected to provide a C.V. and covering letter along with the application form.

When are Teaching Assistants hired?

There are three steps to the normal TA hiring process: the posting period, the application deadline, and the notification period. For teaching assistantships for the Fall 2007 semester, the dates are as follows:

Posting period: March 15 – April 15, 2007
Application deadline: April 15, 2007.
Notification period: April 15 – May 20, 2007.

In certain cases, departments may also make Supplementary Postings, which appear in the days or weeks immediately before a course begins, and which can be posted for a much shorter length of time. Check the TA bulletin board in your department regularly, or inquire with the person responsible for TA hiring, to ensure that you know about any last-minute postings.

What is AGSEM? AGSEM is the union that represents all graduate students who are employed as teaching assistants at McGill University. If you have questions about the union or would like to get involved, feel free to contact us at any time.

Information about the posting and application procedures is outlined in Article 12 of AGSEM’s Collective Agreement; information about the selection and appointment procedures can be found in Article 13.
