WHAT WOULD ALTERNATIVE STRATEGIES LOOK LIKE?

Alternative economic strategies would protect the environment for the long term and improve the quality of life for the majority of the world’s people. Some ideas...

• use full cost pricing - for example, a price for gas which reflects impact on the environment;

• emphasize community responsibility, not just individual rights;

• develop social capital (resources that belong to everyone), not just private capital;

• promote cooperative activity to balance the "worship" of competition;

• pay more attention at the local level to protecting the environment and becoming more self-reliant;

• develop and use ‘environmental accounts’ in government planning;

• regulate commodity flows so we don’t use up all of our natural resources;

• push for international agreements on a fairer distribution of wealth.
