Americas Is Possible!
The "Teach-in" of the II People's Summit of the Americas : A one day public event, where critical reflexions on globalization will be woven with art and music. This is an invitation to put an end to the belief that politics and trade are boring, complicated and disconnected from our daily lives!
On April 20th of 2001, the "teach-in" of the II People's Summit will highlight civil society's capacity for resistance and for developing alternatives, and will reinforce our conviction that "another Americas is possible".
The "teach-in's" festive environment will bring together discussions, personal testimonies and reports from North and South, colourful visual and musical clips, amazing animation and 15 musical performances to boot!! Several "mystery" guests are also expected to unite the politics, the learning and the fun. The "teach-in" will deliver a public political challenge to the 34 heads of State of the hemisphere who will meet in Quebec City during the Summit of the Americas, to further the secretive discussions around a hemispheric-wide free trade deal, the FTAA. They are also making deals on other important areas of public life such as education, human rights, and democracy. But for us, these are not negotiable nor are they tradable! These are fundamental aspects of quality of life and human development. We will not accept that they be submitted to the rules of profit. Corporate-led globalization is not our way!
Based on day-to-day experiences, the teach-in will bring to the forefront of the public agenda issues such as health care, global social justice & resistance, environmental deregulation, sweatshop labour, agriculture / land reforms, and indigenous rights. We believe that trade is not the main vehicule for economic, social and cultural development. Another Americas is possible! Trade agreements, such as the proposed FTAA, undermine what we, as a people, want!
WE DEMAND... Participatory democracy; debt cancellation; poverty eradication; access to essential drugs; food security and food sovereignty; respect and prevalence of human rights over trade agreements; work with dignity and promotion of core labour rights; recognition and enforcement of indigenous rights and environmental protection.
A HANDFUL OF LEADERS ARE MAKING DECISIONS WHICH IMPACT ALL OF HUMANITY!! LET'S TAKE HOLD OF OUR HISTORY AND CREATE A DIFFERENT TOMORROW...
