Romanow Commission: Facts & Deadlines

The Commission's Mandate

The Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada is chaired by Roy Romanow - former premier of Saskatchewan. The mandate of the Commission is:

  • To recommend policies and measures to ensure the long term sustainability of a universally accessible, publicly-funded health system; a system which offers quality services to Canadians. .

  • To recommend policies and measures which would strike a balance between investments in prevention and health maintenance and investments directed to care and treatment.

    The Process

    Romanow has announced a two-stage process:

    I. Fact-finding stage that will include a review of existing research. New research may also be undertaken. An interim report will be issued in January 2002.

    II. A dialogue with the Canadian public and "interested stakeholders" based on the interim report of the first stage. The final report will be issued in November 2002.

    Deadline for Submissions

    Organizations and groups have been invited to send formal submissions to the Commission. The deadline for receipt of these submissions is November 1, 2001. All submissions will be posted on the Commission website. Submissions should not exceed 25 pages. You can mail in a paper copy or email a Word format (letter sized-pages) submission.
