Artist's Statement
“Memory is my Muse”
Collective memories of ancestors and fantasies of their realities, layered upon concepts of zoomorphism and anthropomorphism; this series explores these themes together and separately, in illustrations of characters in historical and imaginary situations. Fascinated by the stories of life during World War I, I use historical photographs and documents to reveal the life of my ancestors and their contemporaries during this time of naivety, bravery and hope. The second set of illustrations are less concerned with what was, and more concerned with what might be or could have been. All about fantasy, these pieces depict different times and places, where “The Year of the Rabbit” is exploited and celebrated in depictions of rabbit-ness in the world of humankind.
