Carsharing is the time-sharing of a car, similar
to how people time-share holiday villas/resorts. Carsharing allows members to
have access to the mobility that automobiles offer without the burden of
private ownership. Carsharing allows a group of people to share the
financial, social and environmental costs of owning a vehicle, while enjoying
the benefits that automobiles offer. Co-op members pay for the distance and
hours they drive. Carsharing started in Germany and Switzerland in
the 1980s. Since then it has spread to many countries, including Canada.
There are carsharing organisations (CSOs) in Quebec
(Montreal, Quebec
City, Gatineau, and Sherbrooke), Ontario (Ottawa, Toronto, Kingston, Guelph,
and Kitchener/Waterloo)
British Columbia ( Victoria,
Vancouver/Tofino/Nanaimo/Cortes
Island/Courtney/Whistler) and Alberta (Calgary and EDMONTON) A CSO is also planned
for London, Ontario. Some CSOs
are operated as non-profit co-operatives and others as for-profit businesses.
