Distribution of information is one of the main functions of CLGRO. Therefore, we have tried to make this web site accessible to everyone (such as those with text-only access, old web browsers, slow access, or those using text readers), while also providing a good format for those with full browser functionality.
We have tested our web pages to make sure they comply with accessibility standards using various services found on the web, including the W3C HTML Validation Service. The W3C Organization also publishes a checklist for web designers interested in creating web sites accessible to all browsers.
The navigation hierarchy has been kept to a maximum of 3 levels, but usually it is only 2 levels. The same navigation links exist at the bottom of each page for ease of use.
The 6 main categories were each given a colour in the "rainbow flag" - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. The actual "shade" of each colour, including the colours of the background, foreground, links, and colours used in graphics, were chosen from the 216 "safe" browser colours which are available on all browsers capable of displaying colour. The only exception is the 25th Anniversary pages. The Steering Committee wanted "silver" to be the prominent colour. To achieve this, we had to use 24-bit colours. Growsers not showing graphics should see a "safe" grey coloured background.
Readers can choose whether to use "frames" or not. Browsers without frame capability will see the site with no frames even if they choose frames.
Our logo is the only graphic on the web site, except for the buttons in the "frames" version. Our reasoning is that people who choose to use frames will probably want more graphics. The size of all graphics was minimized by choosing fewer colours so that compression algorithms are more efficient. Again, the exception is the silver background on the 25th Anniversary page and button. In this case, to keep the size small, the "tile" mechanism is used to "paint" silver behind the words.
If you have suggestions for how we could improve accessibility of these pages, please let us know at clgro@web.ca.
These web pages were designed and are being maintained by D. R. Arcand and Neil Brandt, on a volunteer basis. The animation files on the 25th Anniversary pages (see the archive) were created and donated to CLGRO by Ave.
