COME, LET US FOLLOW

May be sung to: Morecambe (#378 VU)or Morestead (#539 VU)

1.
Come, let us follow footsteps on the way -
Prints of the one, who taught us how to pray.
Look to the cross, it is a sign of peace.
Let all the world, with love, its conflict cease.

2
Into the desert, tempted, lost and torn,
Sharing the load, each other's tears are borne.
Look to the cross. It is a sign of peace.
Let all the world, with love, its conflict cease.

3.
Living in love, may justice be our gain.
Thus on the tree He does not die in vain.
Look to the cross. It is a sign of peace.
Let all the world, with love, its conflict cease.

4.
Now God is with us, present in each breath,
Telling the story life is more than death.
Look to the cross. It is a sign of peace.
Let all the world, with love, its conflict cease.

This hymn was published in "Gathering" for Lent Easter Pentecost 2002.
"Gathering" is a worship resource periodical of the United Church of Canada

Note: The following similar text was written to be sung to the hymn tune Crucifer, as attempt to get away from the triumphalist and battle imagery of the original 1887 text by George William Kitchin. The 1991 text below may be used successfully with Crucifer, if it is played in a gentle fashion.

LIFT HIGH THE CROSS. IT IS A SIGN OF PEACE
LET ALL THE WORLD, WITH LOVE, ITS CONFLICT CEASE.

COME LET US FOLLOW FOOTSTEPS ON THE WAY,
PRINTS OF THE ONE WHO TAUGHT US HOW TO PRAY.
LIFT HIGH THE CROSS...

INTO THE DESERT, TEMPTED, LOST AND TORN,
SHARING THE LOAD, EACH OTHER'S TEARS ARE BORNE.
LIFT HIGH THE CROSS...

LIVING IN LOVE, MAY JUSTICE BE OUR GAIN.
THUS ON THE TREE HE DOES NOT DIE IN VAIN.
LIFT HIGH THE CROSS...

NOW GOD IS WITH US, PRESENT IN EACH BREATH,
TELLING THE STORY LIFE IS MORE THAN DEATH.
LIFT HIGH THE CROSS...
