Humanize Toronto

Humanize Toronto is the humanist voice of city activism. As such, it is focused on the issues of Real Democracy, the Environment and Human Rights at the municipal level.

A political project of the Humanist Movement, HTO began by running candidates in the 2000 City Elections. Immediately after the election, we began an 'Experiment in Real Democracy'. This campaign was centered on getting public input into the Toronto Budget, and was carried out door-to-door and on the web for three years. Each time, the results were that public transit should be City Council's top budget priority. Following this, we then began a campaign for real funding for the TTC, and also worked to make Smog Days=Free TTC.

In the city election of 2003, HTO ran six candidates for city councillor. Since then, we have been developing projects on our governments' reckless disregard of the unhoused. In November of 2005, we organized the Sleep-Out in Solidarity in front of City Hall, to protest the ban on sleeping at Nathan Phillips' Square, and the lack of municipal action on homelessness. We are currently gearing up for the 2006 city elections.

HTO is working for a Toronto of Real Democracy, a healthy Environment, and Human Rights – a city in tune with the needs of its residents, and with the local power to make those needs reality. Join us.
