The Conference:

The purpose of this international conference is to provide a venue for sharing knowledge, research and development in IT and to promote the development of IT applications in human services. Based on historical data, we anticipate participation of 500 or more.

Conference Theme:

The Husita 8 conference theme is "Information Technology and Diversity in Human Services: Promoting Strength in Difference" and the conference will explore the myriad ways that information technology (IT) connects people and provides functionality for a range of human needs. The conference will focus on two sub-themes: protecting and connecting. Each area will be expanded and developed into different topics in Plenary Sessions and Workshops. Other topics which fit the main theme will also be considered.

Protecting:

  • Technology and privacy in the Human Services - issues and trends around protecting information including legal and policy dimensions
  • Using technology to prevent abuse of children, youth, seniors, and other vulnerable populations. Exploring cyber abuse in the forms of cyber pornography, cyber stalking, and cyber bullying are examples.
  • Technology and ethics - issues and trends (e.g. A Technology Bill of Rights)
Connecting

  • Emerging technologies that help diverse groups of people access human services and information , through electronic community development in areas such as education, health, justice, community development & social services Includes e-government initiatives, e-communities, self-help and peer support
  • Technologies to deliver professional services (e.g. cybercounselling, virtual therapies, therapeutic games) or self-help and peer support services - issues, trends, applications, and addressing diversity issues
  • Encouraging technology literacy in various human services sectors, including education, health, Justice, Community Development and Social Services
  • Engaging hard-to-reach populations and exploring diversity at an organizational level including human resources, planning, budgeting, research, ethics, training, clinical practice, strategic planning, health promotion, marketing and communication
  • Technologies to provide training and education - issues, trends, applications, and addressing diversity issues
  • Technologies to enhance management and administration - issues, trends, applications, and addressing diversity issues
Format of Presentation:

Presentations may be made in the following formats:
  • Paper presentation - Papers will be grouped into similar topics. Each of 2 or 3 presenters will have 20 minutes each to present their paper, followed by a general discussion.
  • Poster Session - A two hour poster session will run parallel to paper presentations and concurrent with social events. The presenter must be available to explain their work
  • Workshop -Two hour workshops will be used to train or develop skills in a particular area
  • Software demonstrations - Developers will present their software in groups of two with 30 minutes for each presentation.
Abstract Submission Guidelines:

Submitted abstracts will be peer reviewed by the Husita8 Program Committee and decisions made within four weeks of receipt of abstract.

Submitted Abstracts should include:

A separate title page for the Abstract with Author's contact information: name(s), job title (e.g. student, professor, practitioner etc.), organization, address, email address, and phone number. Author(s) should be identified only on the title page to permit anonymity throughout the review process. Other guidelines include:
  • No longer than 300 words, and double-spaced lines
  • Include title of the abstract, major thesis or findings and conclusions
  • Contributors should retain a copy of the abstract, as abstracts will not be returned
  • Include your preference for paper, workshop, or poster presentation
  • Submissions must be in Word or RTF format
NOTE:

All conference presenters, once accepted, must register for the conference in the normal manner and pay the early bird or regular registration fee.

Presentation Times:

Monday, August 27 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. - Tuesday, August 28 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. - Wednesday, August 29 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Software Prize:

Haworth Press and two other groups have agreed to award prizes for the best human services software presented at the conference. Further information will be available shortly.

Proceedings:

Accepted abstracts will be printed in the Book of Abstracts, on CD and on the Husita8 website, with authors' permission. Authors may wish to submit a paper based on their presentation for possible inclusion in an edited text published by Haworth Press which will be simultaneously published as a special issue of the Journal of Technology in Human Services.
