Shazaam! Literacy, Art & Media

When the program started 4 years ago, we asked: What would your superpower be?
Today we ask: How and who would you be? What is important to you and why?

Lakeshore Arts has again joined forces with Humber College, Toronto Culture and the Toronto District School Board to present Shazaam! A Literacy, media and art workshop for the Grade 7 and 8 students of Second Street JMS and the grade 10 CyberArts students of Lakeshore Collegiate Institute.

2011 – Shazaam Grade 10

Visually interpreting the Declaration of Human Rights

7 - Grade 10 students in the CyberArts program at Lakeshore Collegiate took on this challenge as part of the Shazaam! program. Each student selected one of the 27 articles to create wearable art.

Working with artists, Sara Downing and Kasia Ulbin alongside teacher Mark Koczij, the students incorporated techniques from both Illustrator and Photoshop to create their designs.

A top design was selected honouring student Adam Rose for an innovative and provocative interpretation of the project beyond linear thought and runner up Cinan Batada for demonstrating exemplary technical software skills for his design.

All students should be commended on their fine work on this very challenging topic.

Shazaam! 2010

In YEAR 4 the program underwent significant changes that saw more emphasis on interactive group work and exercises to foster group story and character development with playwright Thomas Morgan Jones. When discussing the metaphor of heroism students were able to transfer human qualities into their character’s values (along with super powers). Friendship, loyalty, accepting others differences and working together to overcome obstacles were the ideals represented when the classes created their collective story: “Journey to Mars” (Mr. Lazenka’s class) and “Daisy’s Life of Love; And the Sock Monkey’s New Friend” (Mr. Romeo’s class). Each student interpreted a piece of their collective story with the assistance of artist Sara Downing.

In 2010 the Grade 10 students in the CyberArts program at Lakeshore Collegiate were challenged with visually depicting an Article of the Declaration of Human Rights as part of the Shazaam! program.

Working with artists, Sara Downing and Kasia Ulbin alongside teacher Mark Koczij, the students incorporated techniques from both Illustrator and Photoshop to create their designs.

Three top designs were selected from a blind juried panel including Pam McFayden, Art Department, LCI, Toby Fletcher, Associate Dean, Humber College, Media Studies, Denise Dickin, Coordinator, The Assembly Hall and our Youth Coordinator, Melissa McGrath.

All students should be commended on their fine work on this very challenging topic. Which one is your favourite?
