The Wave
Waving at other cyclists is
infectious. After a while I
wonder why I didn't do it earlier.

So why not very day? Sure not
all wave back and some
will
probably think I am weird
or something, but fuck it, it's
a
nice thing to do. Some of my
Latino friends complain
that
people in Toronto are not
as friendly as back home. But
that's
not really true. You
just have to give people a chance.
I found after waving and
smiling at so many cyclists yesterday
that many wave back or smile
although I wouldn't blame them if
they don't. I can appreciate
that they're caught up in riding
their bikes or being deep in
thought about something. Or, if they're
like me, busy trying not to
get doored and surviving in
traffic.
But I do believe that
it might make them smile and help
them
forget about the often
grim reality of riding on city
streets
for a
moment.
There is a camaraderie
amongst roadies and couriers
already.
Why not amongst
everyday cyclists and commuters?
I will make an effort to be
more friendly to my
fellow
cyclists; say hi, wave,
offer help, encouragement and a
funny
comment on a bad
day.
Who knows, maybe one
person every day or every week will
feel
less alone and a part of
something amongst all those cars.
