Alone

An old friend of mine sent me a chain email today. The kind you do not mind getting so much. It was a collection of Buddhist wisdom. One line struck me.
'Every day, spend some time alone.'

I tried to think of a time when I am alone every day and then it hit me.
When I ride my bike. Alone with my thoughts in the middle of all that traffic
and the chaos of a bustling city. Alone. Just me and the bike lane.

I didn't realize just how important that time has become for me. After work
I sigh with relief when I get on my bike to ride home or to meet people. Sure riding can be frustrating. Traffic, bad weather or the dreaded flat tire. But there still is peace of mind and sometimes blissful solitude on that road. And every day I find it for a while pedaling along.
Alone.
