Yellow bikes

It's Saturday. The downtown is spilling over with cars and
its sidewalks are packed with people moving to and fro.
Out of the corner of my eye I see a yellow bike ...

... float by quietly past all that engine noise and chatter
and slips around a corner out of sight.
Yellow bikes represent all that is great about cycling.
They're simple, joyful, efficient and elegant. Whenever I
see one I want to shout out. "Yelllooowww Bike!" and wave
to the rider. Often I do. They beautify the city with their
vintage charm and bouncy grace. Their yellow paint job and
blue forks mirror sky and sun. Water and light.
They give me hope that ideas like sharing, community and
peace, which seem so under siege these days, still have a
place where they can grow. Making me even more proud to live
in this city.
