Lance Armstrong (originally posted June 2003)

I saw the SUBARU ad on TV with Lance Armstrong last night.

Could not help it. Yuck. His cancer-beater, Tour de France champ
faccia glaring very close up into the camera. He is a great rider, but
really I am not impressed.

SUBARU = U R A BUS !!

Elections & Bicycles & Cars

Ever notice that in all that city election trash talk
about our city that bicycles are hardly ever mentioned?

Super Cycle

For years, I've been telling people:
"If it says 'Super' or 'Pro' on the bike. It ain't."

Well, in a way, I was wrong all along. And the veteran
classic CCM Supercycle is the exception to the rule.
It's a Canadian institution. Blue, and solid like the
Canadian shield. Thirty years later they're still on
the road and little worse for wear. They must have used
the finest cancer-causing Hamilton steel I am sure.
They sit quietly locked onto post and rings all over
town ready for anything we can throw at them: Heat,
humidity, rain, snow, sleet, ice and slush. Sure they
rust but they do so with an understated elegance.

Return of the The Traveller - Part II

Last night I was walking along King street just west of
Bathurst when a Bikey locked to a post and ring made me stop
dead in my tracks.

It was the Traveller!! Michelle's Bikey!

The Traveller - Part I

Michelle loves her vintage folding bike.

Rusty and golden, banana seat and all. It's a low rider extra
-ordinaire. Old school written all over it. She rode it all
over the market, to work and back and late into the night;
steering with one hand and smiling. It's the Traveller.
One day she left the Traveller next to the Last Temptation.

Ring Posts

It's such a simple idea.

Take something so boring, utilitarian and gray and
well, just paint it. And there are thousands of them too.

Here to stay

Bicycles are here to stay.
I know that drivers would likely prefer to have less to worry about.
One obstacle less to deal with, while talking on the cell phone,
checking the make up or having another road rage moment.
But it is no use. Bicycles are here to stay.

The Honk

The Honk

You gotta hate the honk.

You know, when they come up behind you and almost scare
the hell out of you by honking their horn just before they pass.
I have heard various reasons for the honk.
'Oh, I am just letting you know that I was coming.'
or the ever popular reasons,
'You're riding too far to the left.'
'Stupid Cyclists!'
'You're not allowed to ride side by side'
or simply,
'Single File!'
Single file? My ass!

The Shrug

Wendy has got it right.

When you get to the traffic light first and the driver behind you
is giving you grief about not being able to turn right.
Just shrug your shoulders.

Lemonade

Lemonade

I stop at all lemonade stands. Smell the Tang.
Cars never do. They just drive by.

I think car drivers miss out on so much.
The call of a bird, wind playing in the branches
of trees, the smell of fresh cut grass or scent
of tree blossoms in the spring. And then there's
feeling of the sun warming your arms in the morning.

The Wave

Waving at other cyclists is infectious.
After a while I wonder why I didn't do it earlier.

Yellow bikes

It's Saturday. The downtown is spilling over with cars and
its sidewalks are packed with people moving to and fro.
Out of the corner of my eye I see a yellow bike ...

Alone

An old friend of mine sent me a chain email today. The kind you do not mind getting so much. It was a collection of Buddhist wisdom. One line struck me.
'Every day, spend some time alone.'

Fenders

So much rain. Did not bike today. I was as per usual late for work
and just grabbed a cab to save time.
There's a big empty space in the corner of my office today where I keep my bike. Sad not to have my trusty bike to keep me company today.

Swerves and curves

I swerve a lot. Making unexpected moves. Creeping up from
behind. Speed up and slash across the front of a car.

I ride on the yellow strip in the middle of the road
and cut to the right just as the light changes to green.
I must be crazy.
