Nothing like a set of wheels, poll finds (Globe) (Response by Jake A.)

Globe Story
Jake's response:
The environics people who conducted this poll on behalf
of General Motors called me back in October, to ask about
my attitude toward my vehicle. But when they found out my
vehicle is a bicycle, they politely disengaged from the
conversation.

Now the results are published, and guess what?
GM has determined that folks would rather drive their ersatz
wombs than--well, just about anything else.
But based on my experience, I wonder how many folks were
excluded from this poll for one reason or another?

Like with juries, poll results can be skewed by the selection
process. Let us remember, as GM/environics tries to say that
thanks to the car, 14% more people have had sex (or more ominously,
almost half of car owners would happily pay double for gas
and insurance), that _over_ half the households in downtown
Toronto (and many other major cities) dont have access to a car.

We walk to work, we bicycle to the store, we take transit to
our friends' houses. Hey--many of us also have sex. We make
choices that make the choice to live car-free easier, and we
shrug our shoulders at a society that trumpets cars as the only
way to go.

Many of us are happy outside of the pollution-causing, war-invoking,
kingpin-making, oil-spilling machines that companies like GM would
have us depend on. Calling the car a womb is an insult to all mothers.
