The Association of Veterans and Friends of the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion was founded October 21, 1990, so that the deeds and ideals of the Mac-Pap Volunteers for liberty/social justice would be remembered and endure as an example and inspiration for present and future generations.

Our Objectives

  • We promote programs and activities to inform the public on the role of the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion of the International Brigades in Spain in 1936-39.

Our Commitment

  • To consolidate and consign all materials available to us regarding the Spanish ‘Civil War’ and the Mac-Pap role therein, to archives in various universities across Canada and in Ottawa to be made available to the public.

  • To organize speakers available to schools, clubs and organizations who desire information regarding the Mac-Paps and their significance for Canada.

  • To prepare a website to be used as a resource for schools and the public; symposiums, exhibits or film / video screenings with particular emphasis on the Spanish Civil War and the Mac-Pap participation in fighting fascism.

  • To create an essay contest across Canada at the secondary school level using the website and investigate a university bursary or scholarship.

  • To start other projects that members inaugurate and to support human rights/humanitarian causes.
