MONTREAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN
LE CONSEIL DES FEMMES DE MONTREAL

                                             Informing ourselves since 1893
Letters Written 2008 [cont]

We strongly recommend that Montreal remind the police to regulate cyclists as they do motorists.

We recommend that the City reintroduce bicycle licenses, as is the practice in certain island municipalities. When licenses are given or renewed, the City could provide a copy of the regulations governing cyclists. Today, when we are run over, hit or otherwise victimized by erratic cyclists, we have no recourse because we are unable to identify anyone. License plates would also make the police’s task easier and lower the accident rate for cyclists themselves. We thank you and very much appreciate your efforts to make the roads and sidewalks safer places for everyone.

The Montreal Council of Women/Le Conseil des femmes de Montréal, (MCW) established in 1893, represents over 50,000 members, whose membership includes 70 affiliated societies and 75 individuals, and is growing. In the past two years over 25 new federated groups have joined the MCW. MCW is a member of le Conseil provincial des femmes du Québec/Provincial Council of Women of Québec and the National Council of Women of Canada. MCW prides itself on the ability to bring people of different backgrounds together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and tolerance, with a common desire to improve the quality of life for all.

Many good wishes and warmest regards,

Sandra Cohen-Rose, President, Montreal Council of Women / Le Conséil des femmes de Montreal
