The Big Pic forest is located in the Northeast Region of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), in the MNR Wawa District. The Big Pic Forest includes Crown land east and north of Lake Superior and is generally north, south and west of the community of Manitouwadge. The communities of Marathon, Caramat and Hillsport are located in the forest. Craigs Pit Nature Reserve Provincial Park is located within the unit. The Big Pic forest shares a common boundary with Pukaskwa National Park on the south-west corner of the unit.
The forest is managed under the authority of a Sustainable Forest License, which is held by Marathon Pulp Inc. The Big Pic Forest is located in the boreal forest, which is dominated by mixed-wood sites. The tree species common to the forest include black spruce, jack pine, trembling aspen, white spruce, balsam fir, white birch and balsam poplar. Tamarack and eastern cedar are scattered throughout the area. A small concentration of red pine occurs near One Shot Lake.
