preparation.
The public is also invited to provide input into the development of a description of the desired future forest and the benefits the forest should provide into the future. As of February 2008 the Invitation to Participate had not yet been issued. It is expected to be issued shortly. |

Forest Management Plan
The Cochrane-Moose River Forest is an amalgamation of the Cochrane Management Unit (CMU) and the Moose River Management Unit (MRMU). The two units were, until recently, Crown Units; however, an amalgamation process was undertaken in conjunction with the most recent FMP planning process. At present, Tembec Industries Inc. is responsible for the forest management planning on the Cochrane-Moose River Forest.
The Cochrane-Moose River Forest is located in the Northeast Region of the Ministry of Natural Resources within the administrative district of Cochrane and covers an area of approximately 1.3 million hectares. The CMU is situated in proximity to the Town of Cochrane, which is located in the centre of the management unit. The MRMU is the most northerly management unit within the Area of the Undertaking, as outlined in the Class Environmental Assessment for Timber Management on Crown Lands. The amalgamated unit will be bound by the Gordon Cosens Forest to the west, the Smooth Rock Falls Forest and Iroquois Falls Forest to the south, the Province of Quebec to the east, and the James Bay Lowlands to the north.
The Cochrane-Moose River
Forest planning area lies across the northern boundary of the Great Claybelt
to the south and Kesagami Lake to the north, and is situated within the
Boreal Forest region of the province. The southern portion of the management
unit is characterized by widespread surface deposits of lacustrine materials
and tills, and has nearly level topography. The northern portion of the
management unit is within the James Bay lowlands and is dominated by peatlands,
with localized areas of upland including the Pinard Moraine and the Abitibi
River Canyon. Approximately 60% of the forested land is dominated by large
homogeneous tracts of black spruce. Small, isolated pockets of jack pine
are found on windblown sand dunes, and stands of white birch, trembling
aspen, and balsam poplar occur on upland sites characterized by improved
drainage. In addition, significant portions of the northern part of the
unit consist of non-productive site class 4 lowlands and treed muskeg.
