Domtar Map of the North Shore Forest
Northshore Forest Management Unit is located in Northeastern Ontario. Major communities within the unit are Thessalon, Iron Bridge, Blind River, Elliot Lake, Massey, Webwood and Espanola. Approximately 60% of the land base is Crown Land.
Northshore Forest is situated primarily within the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence forest region. A transition to Boreal forest conditions can be seen in its northern limits. The forest supports tree species such as Red, White and Jack Pine, Spruce, Poplar, White Birch and Maple.
A number of mills receive wood from this forest unit. Major firms include St. Marys Paper Ltd., Domtar Forest Inc., Forestply Industries Inc., Midway Lumber Mills Ltd., and Birchland Veneer.
Over the past two decades,
the focus of the Northshore Forest management operations has expanded from
meeting timber production objectives, to maintaining forest ecosystems
and protecting natural heritage areas. With each subsequent forest management
plan, more forest values have been identified and considered for protection.
This continual review, assessment, and modification of the management practices
is essential to ensure the sustainability of all
forest resources.
