Pineland Martel Forest Description
The Pineland and J.E. Martel Forest Management Units are located within the Northeast Region of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). The communities in or adjacent to the management units are the Town of Chapleau, and the unorganized communities of Foleyet, Gogama and Devon. The total area of both forests is approximately 6,400 square kilometres.
Domtar Inc., under the authority of sustainable forest licences issued by MNR, currently administers both the Pineland Forest and the J.E. Martel Forest. It is proposed that these management units be amalgamated on April 1, 2001.
The Pineland and Martel Forests are situated within the boreal forest. The main tree species that the forest supports are jack pine, white and black spruce, poplar and birch, with minor components of balsam fir, white pine, eastern white cedar and tolerant hardwoods.
The management units are
the primary source of conifer fibre for wood processing facilities in Timmins
(McChesney), Chapleau (J.E. Martel) and Ostrom, with additional hardwood
fibre commitments to Grant Forest Products (Timmins), North Superior Forest
Products (Wawa), Norbord Inc. (Cochrane) and Columbia Forest Products (Hearst).
