Planning Documents - 2001 Forest Management Plan
The ShiningTree Forest Management Unit is located in the MNR's Northeast Region and is contained mainly within its Timmins Administrative District. The unit is comprised, in whole or in part, of 41 townships, which collectively comprise an area of 326,955 hectares. The original ShiningTree Crown Management Unit boundaries were established in 1976 and were modified in 1981 and 1990.
The forested landbase is licensed to ShiningTree Forest Inc. (STFI), through a Sustainable Forest License (542321). ShiningTree Forest Inc. has contracted Domtar Inc. to be the managing contractor for the ShiningTree Forest. Harvesting operations are conducted by the shareholders of ShiningTree Forest Inc. which include Grant Forest Products Corp., Donahue Forest Products Inc., Grant Lumber Division – Domtar Inc., R. Fryer Forest Products Ltd., and Liskeard Lumber Ltd.
Less than one percent of the ShiningTree Forest is patented land. This forest provides conifer primarily for the Elk Lake Planing Mill, Domtar Inc. (Timmins) and Gogama Forest Products. Veneer quality poplar is supplied to Norbord Industries in Cochrane. Strandboard grade poplar is provided to the Grant Forest Products mills in Englehart and Timmins. While sawlog grade hardwood and white pine is processed by R. Fryer Forest Products in Albany.
The unit falls within the Boreal Forest Region. Supporting tree species are typical to the associated forest type and distribution pattern. Wildfire history has played an important role in the development of the forest age-class structure. The southern part of the forest falls within the transition zone between the Boreal Forest and the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Forest. Some species association with the latter zone can be found in scattered pockets.
No major population centres are found within the unit; however, the smaller communities of Gogama, Westree, Shining Tree and Morin Village are found within it. The Mattagami First Nation is located on the band reserve, which is in the northwest corner of the unit. The unit is accessed from Highway #560, which bisects the middle of the unit from east to west. The western boundary of the unit follows the Canadian National Railway line.
