The Smooth Rock Falls Forest is located in northeastern Ontario, in the southern portion of the Ministry of Natural Resources' (MNR) Cochrane District, in the ministry's Northeast Region. There are 30 townships in the forest management unit, which comprises an area of 502,096 hectares (ha). The majority of the unit is comprised of Crown land, with 358,666 ha classified as productive forest land and 122,861 ha classified as unproductive forest land. Approximately 24,939 ha of Crown land in the unit have been designated as protected areas, through their regulation or proposed regulation as provincial parks and conservation reserves. Patented land comprises 127 ha of the unit's land-base.
For the purpose of carrying out forest management activities in the Smooth Rock Falls Forest, MNR has issued Sustainable Forest Licence #541841 to Malette Inc. of Timmins. As part of its responsibilities, the licensee conducts forest management planning on the unit.
With respect to the geomorphology of the unit, it is principally comprised of weak to moderately broken outwash, and broken ground moraines that have spruce, jack pine, poplar/aspen and white birch growing atop them. Its flat topography is typical of much of the Clay Belt. The Smooth Rock Falls Forest is used for trapping, sport fishing, hunting and recreation, as well as aggregates extraction.
The forest supplies conifer logs to sawmills in Cochrane and Timmins that are operated by Tembec Industries Inc., poplar veneer logs to Norbord Industries Inc. of Cochrane, and poplar to Grant Forest Products' oriented strand-board mill in Timmins.
The unit's northern boundary extends south from the Hamlet of Fraserdale 130 kilometres (km) to MNR Cochrane District's southern boundary. It is 72 km across at its widest point. The Town of Smooth Rock Falls is in the middle of the unit. Two large rivers, the Mattagami and the Abitibi, transect the unit. Road access to the unit is via Highway #11 (Trans-Canada Hwy), which runs through Smooth Rock Falls; Hwy #634, between Fraserdale and Smooth Rock Falls; and, Hwy #655, between the City of Timmins and the Hamlet of Driftwood. The three southern townships are accessed by the Red Pine Road, which runs north from Timmins.
