Sudbury Forest Description

The Sudbury Forest is bounded on the east by Lake Nipissing; on the west by the Town of Nairn Centre; on the south by the French River and Georgian Bay; and on the north by Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provincial Park. The City of Sudbury is roughly the geographical centre of the forest. Several major highways (17, 144 and 69) bisect the Sudbury Forest. The total area of the Sudbury Forest is approximately 10,850 square kilometres.

The Sudbury Forest is located in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Forest Region. The northern third of the Sudbury Forest is predominated by jack pine, black spruce, white birch and poplar. The remaining south-central portion contains a significant component of white and red pine. Lesser amounts of maple, yellow birch, white spruce, hemlock, cedar, larch, balsam fir, basswood, oak, white ash and black ash are also found.

The Sudbury Forest is the main supplier of softwood timber to mills located in Falconbridge, Chelmsford, Alban, Noelville, Hagar and Monetville. In addition, a significant amount of wood is directed to Goulard Lumber in Sturgeon Falls and the E.B. Eddy's mills in Nairn Centre and Espanola. Some hardwood species are shipped to mills in Englehart, Blind River, Mattawa and Huntsville.

The focus of forest management operations over the past two decades has expanded from meeting timber production objectives, to maintaining forest ecosystems and protecting natural heritage areas. With each subsequent forest management plan in the Sudbury Forest, more forest values have been identified and considered for protection. This continual review, assessment, and modification of the management practices is essential to ensure the sustainability of all forest resources.

Areas of concern are identified around known values such as canoe routes, stick nest, critical fish habitat, moose calving areas. Within the areas of concern, prescriptions are implemented as described in applicable guidelines. These prescriptions may consist of reserves, modified operations and/or regular operations, including possible road and timing restrictions.
