The White River Forest is managed under a Sustainable Forestry Licence - Number 501500, by Domtar Forest Products, which came into effect on August 25, 1995. The White River Forest is located within the Ministry of Natural Resources' (MNR) Administrative District of Wawa, which in turn is administered regionally by the Northeast Region office in Timmins.
The White River divisional office of Domtar Forest Products is located in the town of White River. The responsibility for forest management planning is carried out by Domtar Forest products in consultation with MNR and the public. Domtar is responsible for all of the forestry activities on the White River Forest, including planning, harvesting, road construction, renewal and tending.
The White River Forest is situated within the "Superior" and "Central Plateau" sections of the Boreal Forest Region and is fully within Site-Region 3E. The Superior (B.9) occupies the majority of the Forest, while the Central Plateau (B.8) occupies a smaller area to the north of White Lake and the Shabotik River system. Wickware and Rubec (1989) have a similar ecological division of the Forest, with the majority of the Forest being in the Superior Highlands Ecoregion while northeast of the Shabotik River, a small portion of the Forest is within the Lac Mattagami Ecoregion.
Predominant species on the
White River Forest include jack pine, black and white spruce, trembling
aspen and white birch. Balsam fir has historically been at higher levels
but successive spruce budworm infestations have reduced the area of this
species drastically. Eastern white cedar and tamarack are found intermittently
throughout the Forest.
