EDUCATION

Educational Programs : Four times a year, OCSCO holds educational forums on issues of interest to seniors. Topics in the past have been: The Privatization of Health Care, Globalization, Long-Term Care, and the future of Medicare. These forums have taken place at different locations in Toronto, often in partnership with OCSCO and its member organizations. They are free to members. For information on becoming a member click here, once our forums are confirmed, we list them in our "Upcoming Events" section.

Windsor Speaker Series: thanks to the sponsorship of Casino Windsor Cares, OCSCO and the Centre for Seniors' Windsor organized the first speaker series in Windsor in 2001 during October and November of 2001.
Events: The play, "If Not Now, When?" and speakers like motivational speaker Anne Balaban and broadcaster and writer Bruce Rogers.

Forums: OCSCO participates in joint programs such as "The Future of Long Term Care in Ontario." Nine organizations combined forces to hold forums in seven Ontario cities: Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Hamilton, Windsor, Ottawa, Kingston, and Toronto. To download the report, "Long Term Care in Limbo or Worse", as an MS word file please click here.

Internet and Computer Training: Three computer classes are offered to OCSCO members and seniors at large in Toronto: Computer Basics, Internet and E-Mail. 361 seniors took these course in 2001. To find out more, click here or contact us.

Seniors' Volunteer! Project: thanks to an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant for an International Year of Volunteers project, a group of organizations including OCSCO organized a seniors' volunteer fair and special programs and displays during the Canadian National Exhibition 's two Seniors' Days during 2001.

Play: "If Not Now, When": this play, funded by a grant from the Ministry of Citizenship with Responsibility for Seniors, was developed by OCSCO and Ryerson's Continuing Education Division and Act II Studio to challenged ageist stereotypes. First performed in six Ontario cities in 2000, it continues to be in demand. The ABC's of Aging: this conference on aging and aging issues was how OCSCO and a number of partners celebrate the International Year of Older Persons, 1999. A wide variety of speakers and workshop leaders made this May 26 event at Ryerson University a day to learn about and work on Ontario seniors' issues.

The Threat to Public Pensions: This presentation was given by pension expert and author Monica Townson to seniors who came spoke at a Wednesday, January 30/02 forum at the Barbara Frum Library Auditorium in Toronto.
