Urgent Cross-Province MPP Actions called for May 23

Local Activists Respond Swiftly to Escalated Talk of Privatization

When speculating about handing control of Ontario's non profit hospitals to private profit-seeking corporations, Ontario Premier Mike Harris said, "Why not?" This blunt admission signals a change in the tactics of the government who previously attempted to set themselves up as the guardians of public Medicare despite years of back-door privatization, cuts, delisting of services and increasing out-of-pocket health care costs.

The Ontario Health Coalition, working in cooperation with local coalitions and member groups across the province are planning a swift and clear answer to Mike Harris' question. On May 23, actions will be held at Tory constituency offices in ridings throughout the province. These actions are planned to coincide with constituency week when the MPPs will be in their home ridings. The goals? To raise public awareness, to show our outrage, and to hold MPPs accountable in their home constituencies for this escalated attack on public Medicare.

A list of events planned as of publication date is on page 2. New events are being added every day. Please contact us at the OHC to plan/join an action near you. We can be reached at 416-441-2502 or ohc@sympatico.ca. A series of fact sheets on health privatization and current health issues are being released to assist in local fight backs. The first two of these are enclosed. Please feel free to copy and distribute them widely. Two more fact sheets will be released in the coming weeks.
