Enlightening the Hearts

Target areas:

Western Region

The programme has been running in the Western Region since 1997, and the classes have been attracting both children and adults.  In addition, over 55 schools in the Wasa Amenfi District have adopted the Enlightening the Hearts literacy materials in their classes for mother tongue instruction. Over 500 children have benefited from the literacy programme.

Teacher training programmes are held every year to introduce basic instructional practice for teaching literacy and moral education in the schools in the Western Region.

Teachers from deprived area schools are targeted in order to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the classrooms. Moral leadership is a key component of the training.

Northern Region

The campaign in the Northern Region was launched in December 1998 when a vision meeting and training session was held with eight local communities. Most of the communities have chosen to focus their efforts on children and junior youth.  Some of the communities have established small collective farms of soya bean and groundnut to support their literacy classes.
