Community Development Facilitation Training
A key aim of The Olinga Foundation for Human Development is to enhance the capacity of Ghanaian communities to carry out their own development activities. One of the ways in which we do this is through the Community Development Facilitation Training Programme, which assists Ghanaian youth to acquire the capabilities that they need to foster material and spiritual progress in their own communities. The programme has an integrated curriculum that includes knowledge- and skills-based components, and an orientation towards service. One way in which participants are encouraged to serve is by assisting community members to engage in meaningful, participatory consultation. The Foundation helps to prepare participants for community service by assisting them acquire skills in group facilitation and spiritual qualities such as humility and a sense of justice. Participants develop the capability of facilitating community consultation which contributes to the achievement of promoting unity, and stimulates action at the community level.
"No power can exist
except through unity.
No welfare and no
well-being can be
attained except
through consultation."Examples of community development activities that our participants have initiated:
- Community agriculture
- Education Fund for Junior Youth
- Skills training for income generation for women
Practical aspects of the training include skills in community-based research and investigation, project planning, and group facilitation. Participants are encouraged to undertake small-scale community development activities in their own communities, and ongoing analysis of these activities is incorporated into the workshops. Participants also learn methods for using drama and other traditional art forms in the community development process. In particular, they practice techniques for using traditional media as a part of the process of community consultation, animation, and mobilisation.
The Foundation encourages participants to adopt a learning approach, not only for themselves but also in a manner which helps their communities make decisions regarding their own development activities. This begins a process of investigation, action and reflection. "I am planning to assist my community to initiate programmes in education, public health and rural development. . . . The knowledge I gain in this course will help me to sharpen my skills in community mobilisation as a tool for rural development." (Participant from Training Workshop)
