Junior Youth Activities
The future of Ghana depends on its youth. There are a high proportion of rural youth migrating to cities in search of a better life. They are mainly attracted by the educational and job opportunities in the cities. The future of rural Ghana will depend upon improving the conditions for rural Ghanaian youth, especially girls. Creating opportunities in the rural areas for education and employment depend on the ingenuity of the community. One area where we can have the greatest impact is working with young people during their adolescent period between 12 to 15 years of age. This is when a young person's character takes its final form and their direction is set for the rest of his / her life. In Ghana, this is also when many young people drop out of the formal school system.
Youth in Ghana are increasingly encountering dangers such as drugs and HIV/AIDS, and many are facing the problems that accompany poverty. A critical need for "junior youth", is for them to acquire the moral capabilities required to chart a positive course for their own future. ![]()
In this connection, The Olinga Foundation has initiated an educational programme for junior youth, with particular emphasis on girls. The programme operates in the southern part of the Volta Region ---around the village of Dedekope. Teachers and community members in this area have supported pre-youth activities. They have established an education fund for junior youth. The community raises funds for junior youth to continue their studies after completing Junior Secondary School. Six girls have been sponsored through this programme.
"Most important of all is the education of the girl children, for these girls will one day be mothers, and the mother is the first teacher of the child."
