October 9-13th, 2002. As part of this year's Literacy Campaign, 57 teachers from the Wasa Amenfi District were trained in basic literacy methods to improve child literacy levels in their schools. The training helped to increase the number of schools involved in the programme from the original 35 to 55 schools which have participated in the programme over the last year.October 16th to 28th, 2002 The yearly baseline test was carried out in six circuits of the District to test the reading and writing abilities of children not yet enrolled in the project schools. The results revealed a very low level of literacy among children at Primary 6 and Junior Secondary Schools where the project has not been started. Over 250 children in 15 schools were tested (see recent newsletter for more information). The test is used to compare learner progress after nine months of literacy training.
2002/2003 Volunteers: The Olinga Foundation was fortunate in receiving two Canadian Volunteers this year. In September, 2002 Mr. Jaya Murthy arrived as a Canadian Crossroads Volunteer to work with the Foundation as a communications officer. We say a big thank you to Jaya for all his wonderful service in building the capacity of the Foundation and its staff.
We also received the voluntary service of another Canadian in October, 2002. Dr. Carol Guellor assisted the Foundation test out reproductive health materials for pre youth, particularly girls, in the Western Region. She worked closely with the West African Aids Foundation and assisted the Foundation learn more about how we could integrate reproductive health media tools in our programme schools. A big thank you goes out to Carol and all our volunteers.
