Community Organizations
The Ontario Prevention Clearinghouse
(OPC) and the Centre for Health
Promotion (CHP) hope to strengthen health promotion by applying
a community development approach in working with up to 10 pilot communities
in Ontario, including one or more francophone communities. This collaborative
project, funded by Health Canada - Ontario Region, is designed to
help communities use the Internet and to develop basic information to describe
their activities. It is funded until April 1998 to:
-
provide a "toolkit"
and suggests ways for community health groups to use Internet;
-
practical tools to 'join' the Internet (see Getting
Online) and set up a home-page describing local activities (see Web);
-
a 'mapping' process
for community groups to use to profile other health promoting organizations
in their area.
-
document their interest, need and capacity to use electronic communication
and the Internet
-
help in negotiating arrangements with local ISPs or municipalities to sustain
their web-page; and
-
provide a base for "posting" these home pages in a virtual centre for health
promotion.
- See
OPC's Site for the Project: http://www.opc.on.ca/mapping/index.html
Our objectives
* To engage community health promotion programs in extensive consultations
and discussions to determine how to assist community programs to increase
their visibility locally and provincial and their access and use of the
Internet.
* To establish an infrastructure to support health promotion information
networks.
* To establish a virtual centre for health promotion which will provide
a network of current practice, research, resources and information at the
moment it is needed.

One of the first steps of this project is to identify which Ontario
cities, towns, regions and areas have world-wide-web sites (WWW) or home-pages,
and what community health promotion projects and healthy communities initiatives
are currently listed in these municipal web sites as community services
or activities. A prototype of an Ontario 'map' of municipalities and community
'stories' or links to projects was developed with the assistance of the
