The Ontario Health Promotion Resource System [OHPRS] [http://www.ohprs.ca] 
The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care funds fourteen resource centres to support health promotion in Ontario. These organizations share the goal of empowering communities by enhancing knowledge and skills.  Together, the resource centres form the Ontario Health Promotion Resource System (OHPRS).

Assoc. Ontario Health Centres - AOHC [http://www.aohc.org/] Provides information on the AOHC, community health centres and health service organizations, determinants of health, and HP programs, position papers, newsletters. 

Centre for Health Promotion [Toronto] [http://www.utoronto.ca/chp/] Centre for Health Promotion and its funded units, affiliates and working groups, such as Cancer Prevention Interest and other projects, and events such as the summer school on health promotion

Health Communication Unit - [http://www.thcu.ca/] This site provides information on THCU services, including upcoming workshops, special interest group meetings, and consultation services - excellent set of annotated links, well organized, and very useful resources included or linked. 

Ontario Prevention Clearinghouse  [http://www.opc.on.ca] Health promotion consultation, information services,  all accessed here, along with on-line resources, electronic discussion venues, news, tools for the Internet and links to communities and to other organizations. Separate and highly developed French web-site with complementary resources at Centre ontarien d'information en prévention COIP http://www.opc.on.ca/fls/.

OPHA Ontario Public Health Association- [http://www.opha.on.ca] excellent site, good description of projects  - see Injury Prevention, Heart Health, Alcohol Policy Network and more. Still constructing other frames - heavy on graphics and Java so viewer needs Netscape 3 or better. Will be adding Ontario Public Health page soon.

Self-Help Resource Centre [http://www.selfhelp.on.ca/]
A charitable organization established in 1987 to facilitate the growth and development of self-help groups, networks and resources  throughout the Province of Ontario. Website has extensive resources, chatline, events listing, projects descriptions and links.
 

Help Yourself to Health Information [http://www.opc.on.ca.healthinfo/]
Consumer Health Information Services at St. Joseph's Community Health Centre in Hamilton, Ontario has developed a web site to help you locate self help groups and health newsletters.

Heart Health

Heart Health Resource Centre [http://www.hhrc.net] The HHRC provides support to Ontario communities who are planning,  delivering and/or evaluating comprehensive community-based heart health strategies.  At this site you will find links to @heart the newsletter, plus people connected to HHRC, publications, Web Links and a Discussion list.  Worth visiting regularly. 

Heart & Stroke Foundation - Ontario [http://www.hsf.on.ca/] Full of information, links, news, resources, programs and contacts. Of note is the link to the affiliated site for health care professionals. Two items are highlighted on this lively, graphic web-site - the Healthline and Events Calendar. 

Ontario Physical Health Education Association OPHEA [http://www.ophea.org] Excellent lively site with a strong focus on physical activity, especially for young people. Links to events (fall conference), to projects (ACTION CD-ROM and Teams) and to publications.

Can. Heart Health Initiatives Ontario [CHHIOP] [http://www.ahs.uwaterloo.ca/~hbr/chhiop/chhiop.html] Can. Heart Health Initiatives Ontario projects, studying dissemination of heart health programs, policies and resources in Ontario, how public health units are addressing heart health promotion. Has overview, people, research activities, documents and organizations in HH 

Tobacco

CyberIsle [http://www.cyberisle.org] Web-site developed in Toronto as part of TeenNet with a strong research base and primary focus of youth, and tobacco use (much more!). Developed by and used by teens. Very powerful graphics, content and intent. Check out TeenNet island for researchers. 

Ont. Tobacco Research Unit Home Page http://www.camh.net/otru/] based at the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health (CAMH) - lists current publications, contacts with researchers 

Program Training and Consultation Centre http://www.ptcc.on.ca This centre provides training and consultation services to enhance the capacity of communities to implement effective community-based tobacco use reduction strategies.

Smoking Health Action Foundation [http://www.nsra-adnf.ca/english/sblurb.html]
A national, non-profit health organization formed in 1974 to conduct public policy research and education designed to reduce tobacco-related disease and death.

Alcohol Policy Network [http://apolnet.org/]
This site is designed to stimulate informed discussion about various aspects of alcohol policy and to profile the prevention efforts and successes of individuals and groups across Ontario. 

Centre for Addiction and Mental Health [http://www.camh.net/]
The largest mental health and addictions facility in Canada,  with two principal tasks: advancing understanding of mental health and addiction, and translating this knowledge into practical resources and tools. News, publications, resources and links to affiliates such as the Substance Abuse Network of Ontario

FOCUS Resource Centre [http://www.frcentre.net/]
The FOCUS Resource Centre (FRC), supports the training, consultation, networking, and information/dissemination needs of FOCUS Community Projects across Ontario. All FOCUS initiatives center around drug and alcohol abuse prevention.

Centre for Research & Education in Human Services [http://www.crehs.on.ca] This organization, based in Kitchener-Waterloo, is an independent, non-profit organization that works collaboratively on a range of research, education and evaluation projects funded by governments and agencies, locally, provincially and nationally. See web-site for description, newsletter, contact information. 

Consumer Health Information Service [http://www.tpl.toronto.on.ca/TRL/centres/chis/] Provides information on wide diversity of health topics for consumers to make informed decisions on health and lifestyle, references, events and links provided in the site

Dairy Farmers of Ontario - Milk Nutrition, Education and Dairy Farming [http://www.milk.org/] Education and marketing forum for milk producers, includes articles 

Healthy Environments Project [http://www.inforamp.net/~bsmall/hep.html]Technology and Health Foundation’s Healthy Environment Project focuses on research, rehabilitation and teaching regarding the effects of environmental factors on human health.

Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition - OHCC [http://www.healthycommunities.on.ca]
The OHCC works with the diverse communities of Ontario to strengthen their social, environmental, and economic well-being.  Excellent resources, links to community stories and 8 field staff, newsletters, publications and much more. An invaluable source.

Children's Mental Health Ontario [http://www.cmho.org]- Children's Mental Health Ontario
 Santé Mentale pour Enfants Ontario, supporting children's mental health issues and actions. Site has description, programs, resources, links to parents associations, list of centres, and other www sites. 

Ontario Community Support Association [http://www.ocsa.on.ca/] This Site contains lots of valuable information for seniors, people with disabilities, caregivers and volunteers. There is a listing/description of community services and a directory of community support agencies in Ontario.

Assocation of Local Health Agencies - ALPHA [http://www.alphaweb.org/]
 A non-profit organization that provides leadership to boards of  health and public health units in Ontario. Members include board of health members of health units, medical and associate medical officers of health, and senior public health managers

Brant County Health Unit [http://www.bchu.org]  mission, vision statement, contacts, resources and activities 

Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Health Unit [http://www.srhip.on.ca/bgoshu/]  web-siteis full of information about the health unit, structure and location, about events, fact sheets, news, publications, statistics for the 2 counties and other links in the county including other health related groups. Very easy to see all the information they have and to reach them by email. 

Chatham-Kent Health Unit [http://www.city.chatham-kent.on.ca/healthunit/] New, full of graphics, easy to navigate. One email link back to main office, health links are  good. 

Elgin-St. Thomas Health Unit [http://www.srhip.on.ca/Elgin-StThomas/Homepage.htm]  Good descriptions of health unit and programs and email link to single person. May be under construction.

Grey-Bruce Heart Health [http://www.bmts.com/~hearthealth/] which has info, stats, active living, links and much more. Great community site, attractive and informative. 

Halton Region Health Department [http://www.region.halton.on.ca/health/] 
A comprehensive web-site with links and search engine for health resources, health news, and links plus fact sheets on different programs (Mental, Sexual, Reproductive, Environmental and Heart Health plus Food, Family, Communications). 

Hamilton City Social & Public Health Services [http://www.city.hamilton.on.ca/sphs/] 
Web-site contains listings and descriptions of: Programs & Services; Clinical Services; Datashare; News; Fact Sheets; Annual Reports; and links.

Huron County Health Unit [http://www.srhip.on.ca/hchu/]
Good coverage of services and local news, health issues and events. Excellent resources on wide variety of issues. Good links and contact information.

Kingston Health Unit [http://www.khunit.com/] 
Graphics,  interesting web-site with information on the health unit, programs and services, research, health facts, quizzes, "what's new", and a guestbook for sign-in and feedback. News releases and up-to-date stories & info are available, and good descriptions of programs. 

Lambton Health Unit [http://www.lambtonhealth.on.ca/] 
Very busy web-site,  links to programs and services, to news and upcoming events, to the mission statement and much more. The site has a great staff directory and organizational “tree”, great links, good calendar of events and encourages feedback. 

Middlesex- London Health Unit [http://www.healthunit.com] 
New website starts with Flash and once you get in, has extensive coverage of programs and services. Good use of colour and icons, good site map and links 

Muskoka-Parry Sound Health Unit [http://www.mpshu.on.ca] 
The website has more than 350 webpages of practical, up-to-date public health information. It also has an extensive list of external links and other useful information. Colourful, easy to follow, with interesting links and articles. 

Niagara Regional Health Department http://www.regional.niagara.on.ca/departments/health/index.html] New web-site - links to descriptions of each department/division.  Includes an email reminder when updated.

North Bay and District Health Unit [http://www.nbdhu.on.ca/] 
Basic web-site with sections on  Programs, Clinics,  all the mandated programs, and a Calendar, and lots of topics. Links back to health unit only

Northwestern Health Unit [http://www.nwhu.on.ca] 
Very interesting site full of content rich descriptions of programs, services, key issues, and Links to other organizations & health units web-sites. Good description of Administration and services. Every month top banner notes theme or special events.

Ottawa-Carleton Public Health [http://www.city.ottawa.on.ca/city_services/yourhealth/28_0_en.shtml] 
New site after amalgamation Jan 2001. Basic service information. Good sets of links to health information.

Oxford County Board of Health [http://www.srhip.on.ca/Oxford_Board/Index.htm] 
Good basic information on Community Dental Services; Environmental Health Division; Nursing; Nutrition; Related Links; Communicable Diseases. The Nursing section has extensive descriptions of programs and phone contacts. 

Peel Region Health Promotion & Disease Control[http://www.region.peel.on.ca/health/]   Very interesting use of graphics, chat rooms, feedback and interaction areas, particularly in the health promotion and disease control area.  Comprehensive, connected to community issues. Good links.

Perth District Health Unit [http://www.pdhu.on.ca/] 
Attractive, easy to read, with useful information clearly displayed. The web-site has information about the Health Unit, its clinics and services, and health information, public alerts, "What's New" (latest events, newsletters, and links. Only one email address for contacting them.

Peterborough County-City Health Unit [http://pcchu.peterborough.on.ca/] 
Nice looking site, with three main choices to Healthy People, Healthy Places and Healthy Choices. Topics Index, Porgrams Listing, Search box and feedback form are all helpful. Local links to services and government. 

Porcupine Health Unit [http://www.porcupinehu.on.ca]
In northeastern Ontario, the unit serves the entire Cochrane District. This web-site offers extensive general information about the health unit, board of health, calendar of events, map, advisories; and detail on health promotion services, including articles.

Thunder Bay & District Health Unit [http://www.tbdhu.on.ca] 
Information on all programs and services including:  Hot Health Topics; At Work Protecting Your Health;  Specialty Services.  Constantly improving site - colour, photos, graphics, new sections like job postings - check it often! 

Timiskaming Health Unit [http://www.timiskaminghu.com/]
Lively, full of information about services, resources - but very limited number of links (Ministry of Health, Can. Health Network, Health Canada) and no email contact with health unit.

Toronto Public Health [http://www.city.toronto.on.ca/health/index.htm]
Starts with news and issues, grants and quick index to more than 60 linked pages on services, reports, activities, highlights and more. Good source.

Waterloo Region Community Health Department [http://chd.region.waterloo.on.ca] 
This web site  highlights some health issues for the Waterloo Region and provides links to some other public health information sites. A creative web-site with great graphics, links to extensive descriptions and contacts in programs and services.

HIPs Health Intelligence Partnerships & Regional Health Planning Centres

Central East HIP [http://www.cehip.org/] Very new and comprehensive site, based in Newmarket, working with DHCs, Health Units and Academic Centres. Offers info on Data Holdings, on the HIP, on partners projects, upcoming workshop and 2 email discussion groups among partners on issues. 

Central West HIP [http://www.cehip.org/talk/indext.htm] CWHPIN is a partnership made up of seven public health units and seven district health councils, located in the districts of Brant, Haldimand-Norfolk, Halton, Hamilton-Wentworth, Niagara, Waterloo and Wellington-Dufferin as well as McMaster University Faculty of Health Sciences. Good data, links, also Population Health Information Resources 

Eastern Ontario HIP [http://www.hip.on.ca/] Brief descriptions of DHCs and Health Units in area but no links to their web-sites. Not updated. Most detail is in the "other Health Web" links. Publications and documents are not available, only a directory of research associates. 

SRHIP [http://www.srhip.on.ca/Index.html] The Southwest Region Health Information Partnership (SRHIP, sir'-hip) is one of the province's five newly established regional Health Intelligence Units (HIUs) which are funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health. Has links to DHCs and Health Units, plus good collection of health information reports

Algoma, Cochrane, Manitoulin & Sudbury DHC [http://www.acmsdhc.on.ca/]  A large new amalgamation of 3 DHCs, with a bilingual website that covers functions, activities/events, structure and links.

Durham, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine-Ridge DHC [http://www.dhc-dhkpr.org] New web-site of the amalgamated DHC - basic information, and adding regularly. Good list of links to other DHCs and their web-sites. 

Essex-Kent-Lambton District Health Council [http://www.srhip.on.ca/ekl_dhc/index.html] Very basic information - a placeholder for future web-site. The Essex Kent Lambton DHC (EKL DHC) was established in April 1998 following the amalgamation of the individual councils of Essex, Kent and Lambton. A good set of links to provincial health resources and to local/county web-sites. 

Grand River District Health Council [http://www.grdhc.on.ca/]  Very new and good, clear table format with many good links to newsletter, description, contacts, Grand River area groups and other DHCs. This is the amalgamated Brant, Haldimand-Norfolk DHCs. 

Grey-Bruce, Huron Perth DHC [http://www.gbhpdhc.on.ca/]
Like the other DHCs, has general info on DHC mandate, role and list of council members, staff; plus local demographic data and profile, events, news and links.

Halton-Peel District Health Council  [http://www.hpdhc.com/]
Easy to use, welcoming site with mandate, activities, newsletters, links, contacts, and a quiz as well asTelehealth sessions.

Hamilton-Wentworth District Health Council[http://www.hdhc.ca/] Bilingual information on the HWDHC, mission/vision/staff, plus news, events, projects & initiatives, press releases and how to contact them. 

Niagara District Health Council [http://www.niagaradhc.on.ca/]
Comprehensive information about the DHC, the region, news, events, reports, contacts and links. Invites feedback.

Northwestern Ontario DHC [http://www.nwodhc.com/]
Still under construction - will be bilingual. 

Simcoe-York District Health Counci [http://www.dhc.simcoe-york.on.ca/] Impressive site with info on Simcoe York, the DHC's goals, its activities, reports and a map of Simcoe York. Also included are links to public service organizations within Simcoe York and external health information links.

South-Eastern Ontario District Health Council [http://www.seo-dhc.org/] replaces the three former DHCs - the Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington (KFLA), Hastings/Prince Edward (H/PE), and Rideau Valley. Site includes up-to-date reports on the progress of various health planning initiatives, news, events, meetings, and more.

Good comprehensive website of roles and function of this bilingual DHC, links and resources.  Host for 2001 HP summer school

Toronto DHC  - [http://www.dhc.toronto.on.ca/] Toronto District Health Council with a description of DHCs, of their Integrated Health Systems report, Mental Health report, Needs Impact study and more publications. In English and French.

McMaster Health Information Research Unit [http://hiru.mcmaster.ca/] McMaster Clinical Epidemiology unit's web site for health/medicine informatics. Has the HIRU database in java & html, links to Cochrane Collaboration, HEALNet, Evidence -Based Practice.

CHEPA - [http://hiru.mcmaster.ca/chepa] Centre for Health Economics & Policy Analysis, a centre disseminating research evidence to decision makers in the health sector. You can search their literature, read news, see projects. 

Cochrane Collaboration [http://hiru.hirunet.mcmaster.ca/cochrane/default.htm] Preparing, maintaining and disseminating systematic reviews of the effects of health care. Very detailed web-site to search. 

Community Health Research Unit; [http://www.uottawa.ca/academic/med/epid/chru.html] 
Bilingual web-site is full of useful information, publications, monographs, links to public health resources. Note the Program Evaluation Tool Kit and Perspectives journal,  a summary of developments in the field of Community Health. 

ICES Institute for Clinical Evaluative Studies [http://www.ices.on.ca] ICES isa non-profit research organization dedicated to conducting research that contributes to the effectiveness, quality and efficiency of health care in the province of Ontario. Site is full of research info, news, documents, data. 

Centre for Rural and Northern Health Research [http://www.laurentian.ca/www/cranhr/index.html] 
The Centre for Rural and Northern Health Research (CRaNHR) is a conjoint research centre based at Laurentian University in Sudbury and Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. CRaNHR's mandate is to conduct interdisciplinary research on the health workforce and rural and northern health care, with a view to improving access to health services, particularly in rural and northern communities. 

Institute for Work and Health [http://www.iwh.on.ca/] Responsible for research on workplace health and disability, evaluate designated Ontario rehabilitation facilities, and provide information on workplace health to stakeholders. Site has events, publications, news, links, research and more.
