Allan Molnar is a vibraphonist, percussionist and educator who very recently shifted his base of operation from Toronto, Canada to New York. He currently teaches at Brooklyn College and the Drummers Collective but remains active on the Toronto music scene. Allan's experiences in professional music include producing records, writing jingles and recording CBC radio projects. He has played vibraphone, drumset and percussion, both live and recorded, with various Latin, jazz, classical and commercial groups.
Allan is the featured vibraphone soloist on Glen Hall's "OutSource" CD and co-produced Glen's more recent release "Hallucinations" which is currently available on Leo Records (London, England). The next installment from the dynamic duo of Allan Molnar and Glen Hall is entitled "The Roswell Incident" and features "OutSource" along with the legendary trombonist Roswell Rudd as guest soloist. Allan is also in demand as a session player and has contributed work to a diverse range of projects including Dreamworks Records recording artist Nelly Furtado's debut album "Whoa Nelly" and "Shake it Off" by Jarvis Church (Gerald Eaton). For those of you reading this, who have recently returned to Earth from visiting other planetary systems over the past three years, "Whoa Nelly" has sold more than 5,000,000 copies and is the recipient of 4 JUNO awards and a GRAMMY. In July and August Allan traveled to Los Angeles and Toronto to record a number of tracks for Nelly Furtado's November/03 CD release.
Allan has been an instrumental music teacher in the Toronto School System since 1983 and has experience at the elementary and secondary school levels. Over the span of the twenty year period that he has been a music teacher, Alan has received many awards honouring his contributions. The one award that he is perhaps most proud of is the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence that he received in recognition of his work in music education. Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien presented this award to Allan at a special ceremony in Ottawa on May 13th, 1999.
As a music clinician, Allan has provided assistance to over 130 schools through his music education publications and workshops. On a local level, he has assisted parents in the pursuit of private music lessons for their children through his "Ignite Your Passion for Music" programme. This programme not only turns kids (and adults) on to music, but also informs and empowers parents in the process of finding the right music teacher for their children. Allan is also a resource teacher and clinician for the "Sharing Teaching Excellence" programme. This programme is an initiative of the Canadian Teachers Federation in partnership with the Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence and provides financial assistance to Canadian educational institutions wishing to set up workshops and clinics.
Allan has successfully brought many elements of professional contemporary music to the classroom by way of his MIDI-assisted band programme. The Rhythm, Percussion, and MIDI series is a culmination of his work in this area.
Allan is committed to supporting the AHANAIE initiative and participating in whatever way he can either in terms of his musicianship or contributing his skills as a musical engineer. What is certain is that whenever AHANAIE has the good fortune to have Allan on board for a gig or a recording the level of excellence is raised. Allan is available for performance and workshop appearances at high schools, universities, and music festivals. Allan is a faculty member of the Kosa International Percussion Workshops .
