Working with Government Partners
While The Hague Appeal for Peace is a movement led by people, the
campaign is also working in partnership with governments. The Hague
Appeal continues to monitor and support government plans to
commemorate the Centennial of the First Hague Peace Conference,
organized by 25 nations (The Friends of 1999) and led by the Russian
Federation and the Netherlands. The Hague Appeal will also
participate in conferences planned by the Movement of Non-aligned
Countries and the International Committee of the Red Cross over the
next year.
The Hague Appeal for Peace is also collaborating closely with
governments planning intergovernmental events around the centennial of
the First Hague Peace Conference. On January 26, 1998, the United
Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/52/154 supporting
the 1999 Centennial plans originally presented by the Russian
Federation and the Netherlands. The Hague Appeal for Peace has been
included in this UN Resolution as part of the Third International
Peace Conference. The Hague Appeal for Peace Conference will take
place around the governmental celebrations and meetings which make up
the Third International Peace Conference.
Our work with governments will continue beyond the Conference, as
well. The campaign's Agenda for Peace and Justice (to be developed at
the upcoming Conference) will be presented to the intergovernmental
conferences, the 27th International Conference of the Red Cross and
Red Crescent, and a host of other important intergovernmental and
non-governmental events. Working with governments around the world, we
will seek to make our vision for a new century of peace a reality.
For more information about the governmental events that are being
planned by the Friends of 1999, check out the official Centennial site
that has been set up by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
