In the Lands for Life region stretching from the Ottawa Valley to the Manitoba border, 12% of the entire landbase is now in parks and protected areas. This is a significant accomplishment, but there is more to do. The Partnership's mapping work has indicated that 15-20% of
this region should be off-limits to industrial uses like logging,
mining and hydro-power developments. Our work now is focused on identifying areas that still need to be added to the protected-areas system in order to protect examples of all of the province's ecological regions. We will also be working with communities, First Nations and industry to ensure that protected areas benefit local communities and have a positive impact on the region's economy.
