Willi Nolan: "Tampon Crusader"

Tampon Crusader" Wilhelmina (Willi) Nolan, President/Owner of Bio Business International Inc, Toronto, thrives by demonstrating the kind of combination of ethics and business management seen far too little in mainstream corporate offices. The company markets terra femme, a body and environmentally-friendly pure cotton tampon.

Says Willi, " I found the purest, safest, most responsibly made tampon available in the world, and I market it with care. I do it for three reasons. One, the product is outstanding. I also need to support my children and my work with women and children. "

Ms. Nolan says that most tampons are treated with chemicals that have no place in the manufacture of a product used so intimately by women. Chlorine bleach, for example; the chemical that produces deadly by-products like dioxin, PCBs, CFCs, furan, compounds that are known to cause cancer, kill and cause mutations in marine life. "Why would a company that sells tampons bleach them with well-known poisons? My research clearly demonstrates that commercial tampon ingredients present unnecessary health risks to women. Studies also show that the rayon fibres in the leading brands have the propensity to amplify the toxin responsible for tampon-induced Toxic Shock Syndrome! Governments appear to have as little knowledge of these risks as most women; In three years, I've collected more information on tampons than most health bureaus that I've contacted. It's outrageous!"

Ms. Nolan shares the profits from the tampons in expanding her community work. Her proudest accomplishment to date (besides being the mother of two angels), was as founder and president of a 111 unit non-profit housing development in Toronto for women and children survivors of assault and abuse. Willi is a survivor of family violence, and has chosen to use her difficult experiences to offer peaceful lives for others like her.

"Women have enormous power as consumers, because we're the ones who do the shopping. It's time that women take control of what we buy. These things are affecting us and our families; if we refuse to buy products that hurt our bodies and destroy the environment, companies will have to listen. We have the right and the responsibility to take control of our safety, our health and our money. We can do this every time we go shopping, by looking at the labels and choosing to take better care of ourselves."

About her business "My being in a for-profit business is providing an example of commitment to social responsibility that I feel all businesses should be showing. It's taking a little time, but it's working. My committment to community activism, to women and the environment, keeps me in close to the ones who can help the most. And it keeps me honest; I like it that way. Selling Terra Femme tampons not only earns me a living, it's saving women's lives. I can actually walk into work in the morning knowing that the harder I work, the less that women will suffer and die. It's extremely rewarding."

Wilhelmina Nolan's vision of a "better world through better products" is the kind of positive thinking that all companies need to base their businesses on.
